I’ve heard about it for a few years, but around Thanksgiving as I drove on highway 620, there were cranes actually building something.  Turns out it’s the Lakeway Regional Medical Center. The signs have been there for a while, but I was beginning to think it was never going to happen. There were rumors of financial woes, and I think they were true. The government is backing the financing and one of the smaller hospitals in the neighborhood is questioning that. I’m sure it will all be worked out and the hospital will be finished on time.  It’s supposed to be open in the spring of 2012. It looks like it’s going to be quite impressive. The building site has 54 acres and the facility is being built in phases. The first phase of the hospital is going to have 170 beds, but will eventually end up with a total of 400 beds. It is going to be a Level 1 Trauma Center. That’s impressive, because it’s the highest level of trauma care. There will also be two medical office buildings,  parking garages, and an extended-stay hotel. There will also be some retail space  with shops and restaurants.  As with any new facility of that size, there will be  job openings for all of the  medical personnel needed to run the hospital. That is going to create a lot activity in Lakeway home sales, because the hospital alone will be employing 1500 people. Many of the doctors will be coming from outside of the Austin area. The traffic on highway 620 is already congested, so this is probably going to create a big mess until the highway department realizes they need to do something. Besides the medical personnel needed to run the hospital, there will also be job openings for all of the related businesses that service hospitals.
